Cracking Good Fun

With Easter on the horizon, we wanted to treat our lovely followers with a sweet seasonal craft that’s not only sustainable but one that can be enjoyed all year round too.

Once all that delicious chocolate has been devoured, why not have a go at this rather lovely idea, perfect for putting those empty Easter egg boxes to use. And, a wonderful way to provide hours of entertainment for the kids over the holidays.

Get Crafty

Super simple and oh so effective, Jessica shows you how to create a petit palace fit for a miniature king or queen. The perfect play set up for your Maileg friends or similar sized figures, little ones will adore acting out role play fun with this charming DIY scene.

You Will Need:

  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Glue (we used a glue gun, but this can get very hot, so we recommend this is an adult only job)
  • Empty Easter egg boxes (we used a square shaped box and two taller rounder style boxes)
  • Crayons or felt pens
  • String
  • Paper straws
  • Poster paints (we used white)

Ready, Steady, Craft:

  1. Take an empty rectangular or square easter egg box and open it up so that it is flat.
  2. Next, take a pencil and freehand draw a drawbridge door in the centre of the box and the top edging of the castle, as shown.
  3. Use scissors to cut them out (if little ones are helping, use safety scissors and supervise at all times).
  4. Now, glue the box back together inside out with the plain card showing.
  5. Use a rounder shape Easter egg box and open it up so that it is flat.
  6. Trim off any excess card, and cut out a window shape and, if you like, a decorative heart shape cut out just above it.
  7. To make the tower, glue the box back together again (plain side showing), forming a cylindrical shape and trim away any excess card from the base.
  8. Using any leftover card, cut out a circle, slightly larger than the tower and glue it to the top, like so.
  9. Repeat steps 5 to 7 to make a second tower.
  10. Cut 2 long strips of card and cut out square segments to form the top of the turrets as shown. Fold them around the top of each tower and secure them with glue.
  11. Take all three boxes and glue them all  together,  with the rectangle box in the centre and a tower on each side.
  12. Now it’s time to add some flair! Make some mini bunting by drawing and colouring small triangles onto card in various colours
  13. Cut them out and glue them to string and voila! Set aside to dry.
  14. For a final flourish, no miniature palace is complete without billowing flags. For this, simply cut a straw in half and make triangular flag shapes from any leftover card. Glue the flags to the straws and leave to dry.
  15. Time to get the paintbrushes out. Give the castle a lovely lick of white paint - this will require a few coats but is a good fun task to keep little ones busy.
  16. Finally, once the paint has dried, fix your flags to each tower and hang the bunting to the front  to create a warm welcome.
  17. Introduce your little Maileg friends to their regal new home and enjoy some magical playtime fun.

We love an excuse to get crafty over here. And what better reason than to help celebrate Chinese New Year with this cute and clever kids craft.

2023 marks the year of the Rabbit. Here’s a few fun facts that you may or may not know about Chinese New Year

Did you Know?

  • Chinese New Year officially begins on Sunday 22nd January 2023
  • The festival marks the transition of zodiac signs
  • The celebrations last for a total of 16 days
  • On the last day, the celebrations culminate with a spectacular lantern festival and fireworks display
  • In Chinese culture, rabbits represent the moon
  • People born in the year of the rabbit tend to be peaceful and polite, with an easygoing nature
  • During this holiday, it is traditional to eat dumplings for every meal
  • Children receive lucky red envelopes that contain money

Why not join in with the celebrations and recruit little ones to get busy and help make this super simple and effective Rabbit Shadow Puppet. Unleash your creative side with this fun activity - perfect to enjoy together during messy play.

Ready, steady, Craft.

You will need:

  • Scissors
  • Thick black paper or card
  • Wooden dowel or lollipop stick
  • Coloured card, glitter, mini pom poms etc. to decorate
  • Glue
  • Sellotape
  • Pencil
  • Torch

How to Make

  1.  Take a piece of black paper or card and using a pencil, trace a rabbit shape using our handy cut out template design, provided below.

Tip: This is a great activity for little learners to practise their fine motor skills.

  1. Next, take the scissors and cut out the rabbit shape from the black card. Older children may want to have a go at cutting using child safe scissors - make sure they are fully supervised at all times. For younger children, this is definitely an adult only job.

  1. Take a wooden dowel or lollipop stick and position it in the middle of one side of the rabbit shape (it doesn’t matter which one). Then secure in place using strips of sellotape. You should now have a handle to hold your rabbit puppet with, like so…

  1. Finally the really fun part. Take your glitter, pom poms, coloured paper (cut into shapes and patterns) and let the kids go wild as they stick and decorate their puppet to their heart's content. The more colourful the better if you ask us.

  1. Your shadow puppet is ready to wow. Shine a torch in a dark room and hold up your puppet to see it make a shadow on the wall - magic!

Celebrate the season with this cute Christmas craft, a lovely little activity to enjoy with young ones in the lead up to the big day.

This enchanting Nordic inspired woodland character will certainly add some rustic charm to your festive decor. Hang from the Christmas tree or in the window for a traditional, Scandinavian look.

Ready, Steady, Craft.

Super simple to create, this sweet activity takes minimum effort, for maximum effect. Why not go all out and create your very own enchanted woodland of elvish folk complete with different coloured hats, to bring a homemade touch to this magical time of year.

You will need

  1. Pinecones
  2. Felt (in an assortment of colours - we like dark greens and bright festive inspired red)
  3. Craft glue
  4. Scissors (child safe ones are great)
  5. Mini pom poms
  6. Ribbon
  7. Large craft needle (look online for a wooden weaving needle which does the job perfectly and are not as sharp as regular needles)

Little ones should be fully supervised at all times and never unattended with any of the above.

  1. Take a pinecone and place it in the centre of a large, square piece of felt.
  2. Cut the felt to size - so that the base is wider than the top, ensuring it meets in the middle when wrapped around the base of the pinecone, like so;

3.    Wrap it around the base of the pinecone, ensuring that the top forms a peak. Now glue the edges securely in place, as shown below:

4. Pop it to one side until the glue is fully dry.

5. Now, take a pom-pom and glue it in the centre of the pinecone, so that it is touching the base of the hat to create your cute little gnome nose. Leave to dry.

6. Finally, take some ribbon and thread in through the eye of the needle, securing the end with a knot. Note: This is definitely a grown-up's job. If you have older children and are comfortable with them using a blunt, wooden needle then you may wish to let them have a go, fully supervised of course.

7. Thread the needle through the top of the hat, then loop it around  thread it back through and tie it off - voila you are now ready to hang your decoration.

Top Tip: These would look delightful attached to a gift bag complete with gift tag.

That’s all for now. We hope you enjoyed this little read and wish you a wonderful festive season.

With Spooky Season in full swing. It’s time to get stuck into part 2 of our fun ‘Halloween themed craft activity.’ Your little ‘boo crew’ are bound to go batty for these fiendishly fun tree decorations. They are so easy to make and look super effective hung on your Halloween tree (see part 1 of our Halloween Craft Activity) ready for all of your spellbinding celebrations.

Right, let’s get to it.

How to make Spooky Halloween Tree Decorations.

You will need:

String or ribbon

Sellotape

Craft glue

Black pipe cleaners

Silver glitter glue

Felt in various ‘Halloween’ colours (orange, green, black, purple, red and white)

Sturdy card (We like to use empty packaging, used cereal boxes etc.)

A pack of googly eyes

Scissors

Cotton wool

Ready, steady, craft.

1.Take a piece of cardboard and cut out a rough oval shape (measuring roughly 7cm across) - no need to be too precise. This will be your base for your spooky spiders and haunted pumpkins, so keep cutting away until you have as many as you need.

Note: It’s always a good idea to supervise little ones when using scissors. Child friendly scissors are also fab for young crafters).

2. Use the card base as a template to cut out an identically sized piece of black felt for the spiders and the same with orange felt for the pumpkins. Get your little ghouls to stick the felt on top of the pieces of card and leave to dry.

3. Now for the really fun part! Time to decorate. Take the googly eyes and stick a pair roughly in the middle of each decoration. Add spider legs to the spooky spiders by sellotaping 4 legs on each side, to the back of the card. You can also cut out two small triangular pieces of white felt and stick these on to make fangs for the mouth if you wish.

4. For the pumpkins, cut out a semi-circle using the black felt to make the mouth and a small triangle for the nose. Stick these on. Or, if you prefer, go rogue and come up with your own spooktacular designs.

5. Now for the friendly ghosts! Use the template below as a guide and cut out this shape using a piece of card.

6.Take your cotton wool and pull it apart so it becomes nice and fluffy.

7.Take the pieces and stick them on until the card is completely covered.

8.Once dry, cut out 3 oval shaped pieces of black felt, two for the eyes and one for the mouth. Stick these on.

9.Et Voila - your gruesome ghouls are ready to haunt all Halloween long.

Now it's time to hang your decorations.

1. Cut a piece of string or twine - approx ⅞ cm long (depending on the size of your branches).

2. Loop it and hold the ends together.

3. Turn the card over and stick them onto the back of your card using sellotape to secure.

4. Get your mini decorators to hang them on the tree to their heart’s content.

Happy Halloween!

Spooky season is finally upon us. As the leaves begin to fall, it marks a time of fun and fantasy, hocus pocus, woodland walks, collecting conkers and getting cosy indoors.

It’s no secret that we’re huge fans of a good old craft activity over here, so what better way to kick off this magical time of the year than with a fun, spooky themed activity that little ones will love to get stuck into. This amazing tree decoration is sure to be a hit and will take you all the way through to those much anticipated Halloween celebrations.

Let’s begin.

How to make a Halloween Tree - Part 1

You will need:

  • Twigs/small tree branches
  • Black poster paint
  • Silver glitter glue
  • Thick paint brushes
  • A tall, heavy based vase or pot

Ready, steady, craft.

  1. Get wrapped up and go on a little woodland walk with the kiddies to collect some twigs or small tree branches. You will need to collect a good handful of a similar size and length - ensuring there are plenty of branches for hanging decorations (more on that in a little while).
  2. Arrange your twigs onto a surface with a protective cover over it. Take the black poster paint and paint the twigs until they are totally covered. Leave them to dry for at least 5 hours.
  3. Next, take the silver glitter glue and dab it over the surface of the twigs to create a sparkly effect. Leave to dry.
  4. Finally, arrange your twigs into a vase or container. You may need to add some weight to the bottom by adding a few rocks or pebbles, so that it doesn’t topple over. Voila, your Halloween Tree is complete.
  5. Time to add some spooky DIY decorations, coming up in part 2!

Spring is such a wonderful time of year. Breathe new life into this magical season after a long winter of hibernation, with these sweet Easter crafts. perfect for entertaining energetic little bunnies during half term, holidays or to brighten up a dull, wet weekend.

Mini makers will adore these cute creations that can be used as part of any celebrations you may have planned. Let’s hop to it!

Bunny Party Hats

Get the party started with these super sweet bunny hats. A wonderful activity to encourage budding young artists, that’s both simple and fun to make.

You will need:

  • Large pieces of coloured card
  • Coloured tissue paper
  • Scissors
  • Craft knife
  • Coloured Pens
  • Glue
  • Sellotape
  • Pompoms
  • Stick on googly eyes (optional)
  • Elastic string
  • Stapler

Ready, steady, craft.

  1. Start by selecting your card. We like white for the hat base, but feel free to mix it up a little. Pastels in pretty spring shades work really well too.
  2. Draw a semi circle on your piece of card. To get the right sized hat, as a guide, the radius of the semi circle should be roughly 6 to 8 inches. In case anyone's forgotten school maths and needs a quick recap, the radius is the distance from the centre to the edge of the circle. (I promise we didn’t have to google that.).
  3. Then take your scissors and cut out your shape. Make sure to supervise little ones when using scissors.
  4. Form a cone shape by bringing the two ends of the semicircle together so that the edges slightly overlap. Glue or staple the base and then glue along the seam. Hey presto, you have your basic hat shape.
  5. Once your hat has dried, it's time to decorate - hurray.  If you have googly eyes, begin making your bunny’ face by sticking these on to your hat, otherwise you can cut out two eyes using different coloured card.  Alternatively, simply draw the eyes on with a coloured pen.
  6. Cut out a small triangular piece of card in a contrasting colour to your hat and stick that on to make the nose.
  7. Now, draw on your bunny mouth using a pen or marker. Here’s a quick tutorial on how to draw a simple and effective one:

  1. Next, cut out 4 long thin pieces of card in a colour of your choice and stick two to each side of the nose on a diagonal to make your whiskers.
  2. Cut a small slit in each side of your hat using scissors or a craft knife (this is a job for the adults only) making sure it stays well out of the reach of inquisitive little hands.
  3. Take another piece of card and cut out two bunny shaped ears, making a small fold at the bottom of each one. Now, insert them into each slit and secure the folded part with glue or tape.
  4. Take the elasticated string and measure roughly from one side of the base of the hat to the other, leaving a little bit of slack. Cut your elastic to size and staple to one side and then the other. You now have a strap that will keep your hat securely in place, leaving you to get on with all that dancing and celebrating.
  5. As a final flourish, feel free to accessorise your headpiece in your own unique style. How about adding a pompom tail to the back or draw on a pair of glasses. You could make a pretty floral arrangement from coloured tissue paper and secure it to one ear, for a really cute look.
  6. Pop on your hat and let the good times roll.

Bunny Treat Bags

Add a personal touch to the celebrations with this delightfully simple craft that makes a cute and quirky gifting idea to surprise friends and family with. It's so easy to do yet makes for a real crowd pleaser, especially when filled with treats.

You will need:

  • Rectangular paper bags (or cloth)
  • Scissors
  • Marker pen
  • Pompoms
  • Twine or ribbon
  • Glue

Ready, steady, craft.

  1. Take a paper bag and cut out two bunny shaped ears from each side of the top of the bag, leaving a space in the centre.
  2. Now, take a pen and draw on a cute bunny face. If you have any pompoms, turn the bag over and glue one onto the centre of the base of the bag.
  3. Pop some treats or little trinkets into the bag, taking care not to overfill.
  4. Secure the top of your bag with twine or pretty coloured ribbon and tie tightly in a bow to create a ‘bunny ears’ effect.
  5. For extra wow factor, you could create a bag using a piece of fabric in pretty floral prints, cute pastels or fun designs.
  6. Simply cut out a round of cloth, place some treats in the middle and gather it up, fashioning two rabbit ears, before tying with a long piece of ribbon or string and securing in a bow.
  7.  If you're a dab hand with a needle and thread, you could even sew on a rabbit face or simply use a marker pen. Don’t forget to add the bunny tail.
  8. Dish out your treat bags to loved ones, use as table favours or leave out as a sweet surprise for little ones, ready to discover come Easter morning.

And, if you're on the (egg) hunt for a perfect Easter gift, as an alternative to all that chocolate, then our Enchanted Easter collection is just the ticket for little chicklings.

These beautiful metal decorative eggs from iconic brand Maileg are both cute and collectible. In a sweet set of two, they are adorned with stunning, nostalgic illustrations. Is there anything more magical than a snowflake?  We don’t think so and this origami version is a true classic.

Have a go at this super simple, eco friendly, craft activity which makes for a stunningly effective decorative centrepiece. Little crafters will love to get stuck in too.

Create them in various sizes then hang them in the windows, tied with coloured ribbon or as ornaments on your tree. They will give your home a wonderful Nordic inspired look,  full of traditional festive charm.

Top tip: Why not use them as gift tags or stick onto homemade Christmas cards to give them a clever 3D effect that really pops.

You will need:

  • White or brown paper -  use recyclable materials or recycled paper such as used wrapping paper.
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Ribbon

Let’s get started:

Start with a square sheet of paper (not rectangular).

Time to fold.

Step 1

Fold the piece of paper in half to make a triangle, as shown.

Step 2

Fold the triangle in half to create a smaller triangle, ensuring that the corners meet, like so.

Step 3

Now divide the triangle into 3 sections, using a ruler for accuracy.

Step 4

Fold the left section inwards and then do the same with the right, so that they meet in the middle.

Step 5

Turn it over and cut along the horizontal edge, snipping off the bottom. Then fold it in half one more time. You will be left with a triangle like this…

Step 6

Use your creative flair to cut our random shapes along each side like so,

There’s no right or wrong way to do this. Go straight, curvy - anything goes here. Each snowflake will have its own unique pattern, just like in nature! Remember to supervise any young ones around scissors and use child friendly ones if you have them.

Step 7

Carefully unfold your piece of paper to reveal your very own design.

Now you can go for it and create as many as you like until you have your very own little flurry of snowflakes!

Step 8

Get Crafty

It's time to get your craft on this half term with this spooktacular activity. Perfect for some Halloween fun with the kids.

Trick or treating just got a whole lot more exciting with this cute miniature bat costume. It’s super simple to make and perfectly sized to fit your little one’s Dinkum Dolls or other similar sized toy pals.

Mini adventurers will love taking their masked friend out and about with them on all their Halloween escapades.

Add Sparkle

The beauty of this activity is that you can make this as simple or elaborate as you like - use colouring crayons or paints for the base, then really go to town by adding cut out felt shapes, stick on jewels or feathers for a striking look. Raid that junk drawer or craft box to see what treasures are lurking. And, it’s always a good idea to use recycled materials to decorate where possible.

Top Tip

Why not make it an event and dress for the occasion, pop on some ‘spooky’ music and offer some tasty themed treats. Check out this tasty spread. It's a feast for the eyes never mind about hungry tummies and it certainly brings the wow factor!

For inspiration, check out this super fun recipe for easy-peasy sausage mummies from Sainsburys.  Or, how about these scrummy Halloween banana and tangerine snacks from Weelicious that you could have a go at together. They are really healthy too, which is a bonus with all that candy around.

Let's Get Started

You will need:

  • A Dinkum Doll or similar sized toy friend
  • A printer
  • A4 card or paper
  • Scissors
  • Child friendly glue
  • Paints or crayons
  • Paintbrushes
  • Elastic or rubber band
  • Crafting materials such as: felt, coloured paper, paints, colouring pens and pencils, feathers, stickers, glitter, stick on jewels etc.

The template you will need to create your outfit is here.

    Ready, steady, Make

    Instructions:

    1. Gather your materials together. Print your outfit onto A4 paper or card (depending on your printer's capabilities). If printing on paper you can paste it onto a piece of card once printed and cut around it for extra sturdiness. Tip: Used cereal boxes are ideal for this.
    2. Scissors time! Use the guidelines to cut out the wings and headband.  Always supervise little ones if scissors or sharp objects are involved.
    3. Time to add the base colour. Little Brian do some amazing chunky paint pens which are particularly easy for little hands to hold.  And, as an added bonus, they are totally mess free too! If crayons are more your thing, The Crayon Bug has a whole host of amazing themed sets to choose from, from pirate treasure to space and fantasy - kids will go wild for them.
    4. Now the real fun can start. Encourage little crafters to get creative and decorate their outfit to their heart's content. Check out these Halloween themed sticker sheets from Meri Meri which make a sweet option if drawing’s not your thing.
    5. Once ready and dry, (if you’ve used paints or glue) take the wings and poke the designated holes out with a kebab skewer or similar (this is best as a grown ups job). Take some elastic and thread it through each hole, so you have a loop effect. Then, simply turn your wings over and tie knots in each end, to secure them. Now, take your Dinkum Doll and pop the wings on over each arm, like you would a backpack,  Do the same with the headband. Skewer the holes, measure the gap at the back & then add in a piece of elastic, knotted on each end.
    6. And that’s it. Your totally bat-tastic mini outfit transformation is complete and ready for spooky adventures!
